NEWS FROM FIFTH HOUSE LODGE, NOVEMBER, 2009

We are having a warm late fall, with temperatures hovering in the 50s. With the exception of the oaks, the deciduous trees have dropped their leaves so -- as May Sarton wrote in one of her poems -- "you can see through to the structure of things." The old Mainers are forecasting a cold and snowy winter because the acorns and pine cones are more plentiful than ever this year.

Consider a winter writing retreat here. From the top of this hill you can watch a snow storm coming in and, once it is over, you can snowshoe on fresh powder in the woods . . .

I hope someday to see you here.
